Indian Indie Game Developers

Honestly, till now I thought most of the other Indie developers from India were like me. Barely a dozen of them hiding in the darkest corners of the interwebs and quietly making games just for fun. Well, on the contrary there are many Indian independent(it rhymes!) game developers out in the wild. Here’s a list of them I found recently -

Ludum Dare Entry

Ludum Dare 21 ended sometime ago, I submitted a game for it. It was the first LD for me, feels really good that I managed to whip out something in those 48 hours.
Here’s some screenshots of the game -

The game is a platformer with a focus on narration. Here’s the link for my compo entry -

Hope you like it :)

The end result is vastly different from what I had planned originally, probably because I had to rush to make it through the deadlines but still working under the pressure of deadlines seems to really productive for me.

Update: (Another)New game

Well, I’ve started working on a new game. Yeah, I know I already have another project in WIP and a half a dozen more that were just abandoned. Hopefully I can complete this one, then maybe I’ll go back to the previous projects. Wanted to try something minimal. Here are a few screenshots -

The ship looks distorted because of the Sampling is set to Point. The game looks fine while playing. Right now, just the first level is complete, spent more time setting up things properly, maybe the next levels will be easier to make.

Procedural Generation for Beginners Part 2

So…yeah, the next and the final part of the Procedural Generation tutorial is complete. Here are the downloads-

I recommend the HTML download, since it’s more nicely formatted. Here are some screenshots of the final result -

It’s the same example I posted a month or two ago, just the cleaning up of the map is better. I was doing a really stupid mistake in the earlier posted example.

Wrote this complete tutorial in 4-5 hours today in 1 continuous sitting, I don’t plan to write any more for the next month or so. Will probably spend it on learning Blender, Python and SDL or maybe prototyping something.

New Computer :)

Good news! I finally got a new computer. Here are the specs-
Intel Core i3-2100 3.1 GHz
4GB DDR3 RAM
nVidia GeForce 8400 GS 1GB DDR3

Yeah, I know the graphics card is pretty old but it was the best I could get in my budget of INR 19K. Actually, it’s quite enough for my needs.

I’ve wasted the last 1 week playing Trackmania Nations, NFS: World and Alien Swarm. :P Will probably try to do something better like completing the Procedural Generation artice in next 1 week or 2.

New game released

Sorry for not posting for a while, was busy playing Portal 2,so busy that I forgot to post about the game that I made for One Buck Challenge.

There were not many entries for the competition, just 2 of them. As expected…I lost :P

Here the link for the thread-

And oh yeah, Scirra’s website was given a fresh coat of paint recently. The new website looks great and has some extra features like Rep Points. Go check it out-

Update

Nothing much to tell, things are looking pretty bleak right now. Results of CET exams came out a few days ago, dad doesn’t look too happy with that. My old computer blew up too, writing this from my bro’s laptop. So I can’t do much right now, somehow managed to start the 2nd part of the Vertical Shooter tutorial series. I had started 2 projects a few weeks ago, both of them are halted for now, maybe I’ll resume after I get a new rig. Still, I have 3 months of holidays left, let’s see what happens.

Some Examples

Basic Cave Generator and a Name Generator:

Here’s another example on how to generate caves. This one doesn’t use Perlin Noise. I used Minor’s example from here-

MINOR’S EXAMPLE

and a nicely explained article by Noel Berry-

I pretty much replicated Minor’s example. Here’s my version-

Here’s an basic example on how to generate names-

The algorithm has only two conditions-
1. If the current alphabet is a vowel, next one can either be a vowel or a non-vowel.
2. If the current alphabet is a consonant, then the next one is a vowel.
